Among this Midwestern poet’s humorous works liberally sprinkled with the Hoosier dialect, are “The Old Swimmin’ Hole” and “When the Frost Is on the Punkin.” His book, An Old Sweetheart of Mine, large 8vo, 74pp, The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis, 1902. Beautifully illustrated by illustrator and portrait artist Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952), the green embossed cloth cover features an oval portrait of the titled “Sweetheart.” Boldly inscribed to Mrs. Pauline Dessar and signed in full on second flyleaf adding, “With Christmas greetings,” in blue ink, and “Christmas of 1909.” A note attached suggests that the receipient was “...J.W.R.’s (first?) sweetheart.” Cover evidences light wear and starting; o/w VG. Delightful.
