November 1, 1845-Dated, Impressive Partially-Printed Document Signed, “James K. Polk” as President, and “James Buchanan” as Secretary of State, on Vellum, measuring 15.5” x 13.25” being a Presidential Appointment, at Washington (DC), Choice Very Fine. Officially Appointing Robert Grigg as “Consul of Her Brittanick Majesty for the states of Alabama and Florida, to reside at Mobile.” This historic Presidential Appointment is well printed in dark black upon very clean, even vellum with usual folds and completed manuscript is in brown ink. The paper and wax Embossed Heraldic American Eagle Federal Seal of the United States is excellent, sharp beautiful quality at the lower left. The easily readable brown ink signatures of “James K. Polk” and “James Buchanan” at bottom measure about 3.25” across for each. This is a vastly more rare type of printed official form than usually encountered. Superb for proper framing and display, having large even margins and overall excellent centering.
JAMES K. POLK (1759-1849). Eleventh President 1845- 49, Governor of Tennessee, Representative and Speaker of the House. Polk was the first "dark horse" candidate, suggested as a compromise between Van Buren and Lewis Cass. His Administration successfully waged war in Mexico and negotiated boundary rights on the West Coast with England.

JAMES BUCHANAN (1791-1868). 15th President of the United States (1857-1861). Congressman (1821-31) - Senator (1834-45) - Secretary of State (1845-49) - Elected President in 1856. Served during the growing crisis of Slavery, his inactions led the country to Civil War. He was also the only President to remain a bachelor throughout his term.
