Fifth President of the United States (1817-25) noted for the acquisition of Florida and the 1823 proclamation of the Monroe Doctrine warning European countries not to interfere with the free nations of the western hemisphere. <b>War-date</b> printed DS as secretary of state, 1p, large 8vo, Washington DC, Nov 7, 1812. Attractive eagle and shield engraving at top center margin. Early in the War of 1812, President Madison issues through his secretary of state an “<i>Additional Instruction to the Public and Private Armed Vessels of the United States</i>.” He directs that all armed ships “<i>are not to interrupt any British unarmed vessels bound to Sable Island </i>[Nova Scotia]<i>, and laden with supplies for the humane establishment at that place</i>...” Boldly signed at conclusion. Slight paper loss at top left edge; thin mounting strip along left edge on verso; minor foxing; else Fine, attractive example. Accompanied by engraved portrait vignette.

11. All bidding is done in a competitive manner. The
winning bid will always be one bidding increment
over the second highest bid. The minimum
acceptable bid for any lot is 50% of the low
estimate given in the item description or $25,
whichever is higher.

12. Payment is expected immediately upon receipt of
invoice. All accounts are payable to Signature
House. Payment must be made in U.S. funds. Wire
transfer details are available upon request.
West Virginia residents will pay a sales tax of
6% unless a resale number is filed with us prior
to the closing date. For sales outside of the USA
a credit card is requested.

13. Shipment is made via U.S. Postal Service or
Airborne unless otherwise instructed. Handling,
shipping and insurance charges are added to the
invoice. Oversize and foreign shipments are subject
to increased charges. All items are shipped
immediately upon receipt of payment.

14. Golden Guarantee: All material is returnable within
seven days providing that it comes back in the same
condition. There is a lifetime guarantee on
authenticity to the original purchaser. The item(s)
must be returned with two letters denying it’s
authenticity by expert authenticators acceptable
