Rare D.S., J. B. McCudden, Capt., one page, folio, n.p. (France), n.d. (January 1918). The partially printed typed document is a report relating to Combats in the Air prepared by McCudden following his action in a S.E.5. Aircraft North of Raillencourt near Graincourt on 9th January 1918 between 11.10 and 11.35am and states, in part, 'Crossed lines at 10.40 over Flesquieres at 14,000 feet. At about 11.5 attacked 2 two-seaters over Bourlon Wood at 12,000 feet. I engaged a new type E.A. at 50 yards range but could not see E.A. through my Aldis sight owing to water freezing on the lens, so had to sight by tracer. E.A. then went down in a spiral with petrol or water issuing from him….At 11.20 drove an Albatross Scout away from over Ribecourt. At 11.30 attacked an L.V.G. over Graincourt at 9000 feet and after a short burst from both guns E.A's engine stopped….after which he did a flat spiral glide. I got under his tail again and fired at close range….but E.A. continued to go down steeply East and finally hit the ground in a fast glide….E.A. was seen to go down steeply….' With a further typed statement at the base signed by Major Rainsford Balcombe-Brown (1895-1918) New Zealand Pilot, Commanding Officer of 56 Squadron, R.A.F. Killed in Action. Balcombe-Brown further confirms the fate of the Enemy Aircraft and concludes 'This makes 100 machines accounted for by "B" Flight, and a total for the Squadron of 250'. An excellent signed document relating directly to McCudden's 38th Aerial Victory (from a total of 57 confirmed Victories) and signed exactly six months before his tragic death in a flying accident.
