JAMES K. POLK: (1795 - 1849) Eleventh President of the United States who led the country during the Mexican-American War, and secured the territories of Oregon and Washington. A.N. as President, unsigned, penned on the verso of an A.L.S. from Capt. William Tanneyhill of the 15th Infantry Regt. To Polk, 1p. 4to., "Camp South of Vera Cruz", Dec. 29, 1847, in which Tanneyhill draws attention to 2nd. Lieut. E. Charles Abrams, who was in a N.J. battalion and then in Mexico with his company, and who wishes to be among the regulars instead of the volunteers. Polk responds, in full: "Capt. Tanneyhill U.S.A. recommends Lieut. Abrams of N. Jersey for a lieutenancy in the regular Army. Dec. 29th, 1847". Folds, two tape remnants, not affecting text, very good. $400-500
