JAMES H. DOOLITTLE
(1896-1993) American aviator who gained fameboth as a racing pilot and as leader of the first air raid on Tokyo during World War II. Fine content T.L.S., 1p. 4to. on "George Washington Bicentennial Flight" letterhead, Mount Vernon, Va., July 25, 1932. 150 years after Washington's birth, Doolittle chose to honor the first President and the U.S. Postal system by flying over as many of the routes traveled by Washington in his life in a single dawn-to-dusk day. As he flew the routes, Doolittle dropped this letters and many other such letters from his airplane at various cities Washington had passed through during his life. This letter, addressed to a supporter, explains Doolittle's "mission" and is accompanied by the original envelope showing that it has been dropped over Mount Vernon Va. - Washington's home. Fine condition, and one of the better Doolittle pieces obtainable.
