<p><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'>JAMES H. CLANTON </span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial; color:windowtext'>(1827-1871). Confederate brigadier general who originally opposed the secession. Leading the 1st AL, he opened the battle at Shiloh and afterwards raised three additional regiments. He participated in the Atlanta campaign and was badly wounded at Bluff Spring where he was captured. <b>War-date</b> ALS, 1p, oblong 12mo, n.p., [1863]. To an unknown recipient, in full, “<i>On the 27th of last month, I nominated Henry Goldthwaite as Brevet 2nd Lieutenant of McWhorters (Na</i>[thaniel] <i>Clantons) Battery which was acquiesced in by the Company. Very Respectfully, Your Friend</i>...” Boldly penned and signed, adding “<i>Commanding Legion</i>.” Top and bottom margins evenly trimmed; occasional brushing of ink; o/w VG. Paroled at the end of the war, Clanton was later killed in a private altercation in Knoxville. A scarce autograph. McWhorter’s Battery was organized in Mar 1863 in Montgomery County, AL, attached to Clanton’s Brigade. Among its officers were Captains Eliphat McWhorter and Nathaniel H. Clanton, also Henry Goldthwaite. The battery fought at Rome, GA and at Girard where their guns were captured, followed by the surrender of their men on Apr 16, 1865.</span></p>
