JAMES CAGNEY PERSONAL SHEET MUSIC
1424. JAMES CAGNEY (1923 - 1977) American soprano, noted especially for his dramatic force and bel canto repertoire. An important Cagney item, Cagney's personal copies of the sheet music and lyrics from his last musical film, Never Steal Anything Small. The approx. 55pp. of folio sheet music includes the title song (two copies of which are signed by Cagney as "Cagney" at top in pencil, "Helping Our Friends", "I'm Sorry, I Want a Ferrari", "Old Fashioned Political Rally", "Come to Order, Men", "Innocent Appearance" and "Looking for An Honest Face". Some of the music bears holograph corrections and additions, with one excerpt completely holograph, which may or may not have been done by Cagney. Maxwell Anderson and Allie Wrubel are credited with the lyrics and music, copyrighted in 1957 by Allisons Music, Inc. The film Never Steal Anything Small was released in 1959, and starred Cagney as Jack MacIllaney, a not-so-honest union boss who stops at nothing to win an election, and cheats, sings, and dances his way to the top. A great Cagney collectible, overall very good condition. $500-700
