JAMES BUCHANAN (1791-1868) President. ALS, 1p, Mar 11, 1840, 8"X7", Senate Chamber, to Sec of Navy James K Paulding (1778-1860). Letter of recommendation for "Britten Evans Jnr the son of Col: Britten Evans...as a Midshipman in the Navy. His father was a volunteer officer in the Florida War & behaved himself handsomely on that occasion. He took a considerable number of troops with him; & has, therefore claims upon his Country..." WITH a signature of Harriet Lane (1831-1903), niece of James Buchanan, served as hostess at the White House during her uncle's Presidency, "Harriet Lane Johnston, Baltimore, April 5th 1894." VG. Both are handsomely double matted with: photographs; one ounce silver bar, with his image; 2 stamps, with his image; medallion; and a plaque. Nicely framed. $600-800
