JAMES BOND: THUNDERBALL

Subway (45" x 59"); "Look Up" Advance Style A
Fine+ on Linen; Artwork by Frank McCarthy
United Artists, 1965

The advertising campaign for the domestic release of the fourth James Bond film, "Thunderball," by United Artists was extensive. Distinctive subway posters were created for the New York subway system, each showcasing unique artwork and an engaging tagline: "Look Up, Look Down, and Look Out!" Notably, this poster with artwork by Frank McCarthy is considered one of the rarest for this title.

This fabulous subway poster underwent expert restoration to address small tears in the image area and fold wear. Chips were missing from various portions of the borders, which were repaired, and a section of the right border was replaced. The borders were airbrushed, as well as the upper right white background area, and some letters within "SHOWCASE PRESENTATION" were touched up.

With a script by Roald Dahl, the fifth James Bond movie was the first to depart drastically from its Ian Fleming-penned source material. Its highlights include a hollowed-out volcano villain base (designed by Ken Adam) and Donald Pleasence acidly delicious portrayal of SPECTRE head Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
