jackson approves rare medical furlough in 1863
Two revered Confederate heroes. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson (1824-1863), CSA lieutenant general considered by military authorities a skilled tactician and arguably one of the ablest Confederate commanders, mortally wounded by friendly fire at Chancellorsville. Ambrose Powell Hill (1825-1865), CSA Lieutenant General who led the Light Division under Jackson at Chancellorsville killed at Petersburg. Their endorsements on one of a remarkable set of documents involving Pvt. W. W. Floyd, Co. B, 45th GA and his two brothers, T. M. Floyd and Andrew Thomas Floyd, also privates from GA. Pvt. W. W. Floyd requested a medical leave of absence in early 1863 while fighting in VA. The Confederate Army, though essentially in bivouac for the winter, was preparing for fierce combat in northern and eastern VA. Every man in uniform, healthy or sick, was being pressed into action, and furloughs, personal trips and medical leaves of absence came under intense scrutiny. Thus Floyd’s petition was to pass through the hands of Jackson’s and Hill’s staffs, both generals endorsing this request, which then was forwarded to command headquarters where Lee’s adjutant Walter Taylor signed with knowledge and approval of General Lee. Jackson and Hill signed Floyd’s application Jan. 3, 1863, with Taylor granting Lee’s approval four days later. A senior surgeon, R.L. Roddy, approved a 30-day leave on Feb 9, 1863. Documents include: 1). Endorsements on verso of ADS by the Asst. Surgeon and Private Floyd, 1p, 8vo, Dec 30, 1862. Certification for Leave states in part “...having applied for a certificate on which to ground an application for a furlough I do hereby certify that I have carefully examined this soldier & find that he has been suffering from dropsy together with general disability ever since the middle of August...” Countersignatures are penned vertically over text. Boldly endorsed on verso “A.P. Hill” as “Maj Genl” at his “Lt. Div” headquarters where it is forwarded “& approved, T.J.Jackson, Lt Genl,” and forwarded to Lee’s HdQrs and signed by “W.H. Taylor”. Moderately toned; very small holes at fold creases; o/w VG. 2). Partially printed DS, 1p, 4to, “Camp near Orange C.H.,” Nov 13, 1863. Soldier’s Discharge stating in part “...W. W. Floyid...is hereby Honorably discharged from the Army of the Confederate States. By reason of Surgeons certificate of disability and by Order of Genl. Lee dated Nov. 7th 1863...Approved T. J. Simmons, Colonel.” Moderate fold separations with minor paper loss not affecting readability; archival repairs on verso. Good/VG. 3). ALS, 1p, 8vo, Dalton, GA, Apr 23, 1864. Regarding their brother Andrew to the discharged Pvt. Floyd, in part “...Dear Bro, I have the Sad intelligence to communicate to you this morning of the death of our dear brother. One of the members of our Regt. Rec’d a letter from his bro. at Rock Island in which he stated that ‘Floyd of Company C was dead’ ...We are all well. We expect a fight soon...” Boldly penned and signed by “T. M. Floyd.” Very slight stains; o/w Fine. Not only do these documents touch two of the South’s most honored generals who made the ultimate sacrifice for their cause, but also they offer a rare, somewhat detailed chronicle of the plight of three brothers who also made great sacrifices in the service of the Confederate army. One brother was physically disabled by warfare, one died the lonely life of a prisoner of war and the third survived to recount their family’s tragic history. These documents are accompanied by copies of their records obtained from the National Archives.
