JACKSON, ANDREW
(1767 - 1845) Seventh President of the United States, ""Old Hickory"" became a national hero in his defense of New Orleans and as president encouraged Western expansion and paid off the national debt. Third person A.L.S. ""The President"" in text, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.] Jan. 26, 1832 to his future General Amos Kendall and reads in full: ""The president with his respects to Mr. A. Kendall will be happy to see him tomorrow at 12, and if convenient to take a family dinner with him at 4 P.M. He has seen Judge B. & the Judge has written to explain explicit answers to the points submitted, & a copy of the letter written to C. - If you can have it finished by Saturday night, I would like to have it to submit to one or two confidential friends, & then determine the time & the manner. The speech of Walker in the Senate when seen will afford, perhaps, a fit time. Jany 26th. 1832"". At the top, Kendall has added a short signed note dated May 6, 186, attesting that the handwriting is Andrew Jackson's. Jackson also addressed the integral address leaf: ""Amos Kendall Esq. 4th. auditor"". Kendall, a Kentucky newspaperman and strong supporter of Jackson, became a member of his ""Kitchen Cabinet"", an informal group which Jackson preferred over his regular cabinet after their behavior in the Peggy Eaton Affair. Kendall was also one of Jackson's most important speech writers, and played an important part in drafting Jackson's bank message of July 10, 1832, vetoing the recharter of the Bank of the United States. In this instance, Jackson was likely consulting with Kendall over a message to Congress regarding judicial nominations which was read about a week later. Usual folds, otherwise very good.
