(1767 - 1845) Seventh President of the United States, ""Old Hickory"" became a national hero in his defense of New Orleans and as president encouraged Western expansion and paid off the national debt. Fine content L.S. as Presidential candidate, 1p. 4to., ""Hermitage near Nashville"", Aug. 18, 1824, to his supporter DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New York, during Jackson's first campaign for the Presidency. In part: ""...This will be handed by John H. Lewis, Esq....with whom I beg leave to acquaint you. Mr. Lewis is on a tour of observation upon the Western & Eastern sections of the U. States, & will receive with thankfulness any facilities which are offered him. I confidently recommend him..."". In 1824, Jackson almost won the Presidency, receiving the greatest number of popular votes. However, since there was no Electoral College, the election went to the House of Representatives and John Quincy Adams, with the support of Henry Clay's supporters, defeated Jackson. Boldly signed, with minor fold-tears expertly repaired. Handsomely matted with an engraving of Jackson and sent into a black and gold frame.
