JACK KEIJO STEELE WPA-ERA MURAL STUDY PAINTING. American (1919- ). "Study for Washington State Capital Mural," 1942. Graphite and watercolor on paper, 12.5 x 18" (sight). Signed and dated lower left. Steele is one of Michigan's most important Regionalist painters who trained at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the 1930s and 40s along with fellow artists David Fredenthal and Harry Bertoia. Steele has been the subject of a major retrospective at the Cranbrook Art Museum and his work has recently been included in several traveling exhibitions of American Scene painting. This work depicts his proposed mural for the State Capital Building in Washington State. Steele was awarded the mural commission but an earthquake cracked the walls of the structure and the mural project was cancelled.
