Available for your consideration in this lot is a New Model J Stevens Model #40, break-action, single shot pocket or bicycle rifle - chambered in .22 caliber. The pocket rifle shows a 2-piece walnut grip, 17 3/4" partial octagon barrel, nickel finish, ladder rear & globe front sights, and has the required grip-slot, and backstrap tap for the removable skeletal wire stock. The "New Model Second Issue" pocket rifle was released in 1875, and sold until 1896 - The New Model included a firing pin which was mounted in the frame, as opposed to the hammer as a safety feature, additionally the new model was updated with a safer standard trigger & guard, over the original spur trigger. This pocket rifle is stamped on the upper left side of the barrel with "J Stevens A & T Co. - Chicopee Falls MASS. U.S.A. PAT SEPT 5. 1854". The firearm is in good condition overall, though showing heavy patina, and slight pitting - bore shows rifling with wear indicative of age.
