J. Russell & Co. Green River Works Bowie Knife
Featured in this lot is this exceptional, early American, clipped point, bowie trade knife manufactured by J. Russel & Co. from Green River Works. The knife shows the "J. Russell & Co. Green River Works" hallmark parallel to the hilt. John Russell founded his namesake cutlery circa early 1830's, and by 1836 he moved the factory location to the Green River Massachusetts area. A fire delayed the factories success, but by circa 1840, with the help of Henry Clapp, the factory was rebuilt and christened the "Green River Works", with all knives produced here hallmarked, "J. Russell & Co. Green River Works." This knife dates to post 1840 in the 19th century and is truly an excellent piece. The knife shows a unique bowie knife design with silver-like hilt and Stag Antler, two-piece grips or handle, which have three copper rivets or studs securing them. The knife comes with an early-added, harness leather made sheath. This is truly a rare, authentic, original bowie knife that would add to any Early American Bowie Knife collection. The overall measurements of the knife are 9 3/4" x 2 1/4" x 3/4".
