Using his own body as a medium to convey existentialist ideas, Jürgen Klauke engages in elaborate performances and captures them in multiple photographs. The artist's work is often compared to the 19th-century sequential photographs of Eadweard Muybridge. Klauke's photographic cycles, however, do not always adhere to a chronological progression. Their disorder illustrates the unpredictable flux of life. In the present work, Klauke addresses the passage of time by presenting himself as a human pendulum. Bound by ropes and swinging from the ceiling, he seems to surrender control over his fate. While the white pillows may cushion an unexpected fall, they also become ghostly, phantom-like shapes, and conjure an impending death.
