British author and scholar (1892–1973) whose Lord of the Rings trilogy became one of the towering classics of fantasy literature and inspired a series of wildly popular films. TLS, one page, 7 x 9, personal letterhead, May 9, 1967. Letter of thanks to British Ambassador Oscar Morland at The High Hall. In full: “Thank you very much for the typed copies of your indexes. I think it is a very generous gift. It will probably be of considerable use to me when I have time to turn to the correction and improvement of the index provided in the revised edition of The Lord of the Rings published last year. It is the only index material I have received that takes in the Appendices, and these references will save me a lot of time. Thank you also for telling me of the pleasure you and your family have found in my works.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, punch hole to top left, and scattered light creases and wrinkles. This revised edition was a direct result of the Ace Books debacle, when editor Donald A. Wollheim published an unauthorized edition after discovering that Houghton Mifflin had neglected to copyright the first one. After a passionate upheaval from a legion of devoted fans, Ace Books withdrew the edition, and Tolkien published a revised and irrefutably copyrighted second edition in 1965.
