percussion shotgun with patent marked grip safety, #2637. 29 1/2" barrels, 46 1/2" overall, choked modified right barrel, improved modified left barrel. Weight about pounds. Exhibits normal Purdey quality throughout with scroll engraving on locks and mounts along with unusual "burnt cord" stripping to the stock and checkering on wrist and forend. 14 1/2" from trigger to buttplate (steel). Very good plus overall condition with 70 percent or more brown Damascus pattern on barrels. Locks and mounts are a gray patina and show some minor pitting at the firing areas. Stocks show minor handling and use with no major defects just light wear. Actions are crisp and work well with original rod retained. A 7 1/2 to 8 on a 1-10 condition scale. The original to period case is retained with full trade label legible and matching address 314 1/2 Oxford St., London. An invitation to a hunting (expedition) is tacked inside the lid. The carrying ring on top is inscribed, "Philadelphia, Colonel John Hare Powel." The note tacked on inside of lid is an introduction of John Hare Powel to Thos. Rice by Thos. W. Gibxxx, dated 1845, concerning a hunting expedition by Powel and Thos. L. Rice. Note was in letter addressed to Westmorland County, Virginia. The interior of case in green felt and shows staining, mothing, wear and minor imperfections but generally good overall for approximately 180 years of age. The case contains a powder flask, shot flask, eley cap tin (sealed), cap dispenser, tin with wadding, rods, brushes, oilers, loading devices, extra rod tips, pocket shot dispensers, wads and misc.
