J. Pendlud - Original Cover Painting for "A Feast Unknown" (Playboy Press, 1980). This is the oil painting that was produced for the 1980 reprint of Philip Jose Farmer's book "A Feast Unknown." While the composition was created with the title and author credits in mind, the background vista and lack of detail in that background actually enhances the dramatic effect of the cover in a way that unifies it as a painting that stands on it's own merit. Despite the enormity of nature's mighty stage, the intensity of the moment focuses everything on the primordial struggle between two men. The cool background colors contrast nicely with the warmer shades that are used in the figures, which further intensifies the scene. This piece is skillfully rendered by an artist who is obviously comfortable with the medium. His knowledge of the human form, as well as his ability to convey the surrounding textural qualities make this a work of art that will satisfy the viewer long after fact that it was used on one of Farmer's most controversial novels -- a pastiche of Doc Savage and Tarzan with heavy sexual content -- is forgotten. This art was executed on a 13.25" x 19.5" piece of linen paper with an image area of 9.75" x 17.75". Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
