J. Kowar Marked German Martine Schuetzen Rifle
This is a nice example of a German Schuetzen rifle. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked "J. KOWAR, AMBERG" and the left rear barrel flat and left side of the receiver are marked with the matching serial number. The left rear barrel flat is also marked with a number of proofmarks, mostly obscured by the stock. The right side of the action is marked with a crown over "B" and "U" proofmark and the number "2059". The barrel is equipped with a ramped post front sight with guards and a 7 3/4" integral dovetail rail for sight/scope mounting. There is a sling swivel mounted on the underside. The barrel is blue and the remaining parts are casehardened. The upper tang is made to accommodate a tang sight, double set triggers, Martine type action and mounted with a one piece straight grip half stock with checkered wrist, right hand thumb rest, large tyrolean style cheekpiece, decorative trigger guard finial, Schuetzen style buttplate and sling swivel.
BBL: 29 1/2 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 8 mm
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 30986
Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 90% original blue finish with some thinning, high edge wear and light spotting. The remaining parts retain strong original case colors mixed with smooth gray patina. Much of the original casehardening pattern remains and there is some minor spotting on the lever/trigger guard. The stock is fine with a minor age crack on the right side of the forearm and directly ahead of the thumb rest, a 1" round wood repair on the right side of the buttstock, overall some minor dings and dents, and very crisp checkering. All markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
