J. Henry and Son, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, .58 caliber military issue rifle with side mounted stud for saber type bayonet believed to been made on contract for the state of Pennsylvania circa 1861 to 1862 and 1 of approximately 600 estimatedto be produced. Shows Justice style curved trigger guard (refer Flayderman 9B – 024). This rifle remains in fair condition with lightly cleaned metal surfaces and light to slightly heavy scattered pitting and erosion. The markings behind the hammer are legible with no other visible markings. The stock is darkened and in fair to good condition showing some dings, mars, scratches, small losses at the edges and general use. A crudely made loading rod of the period isretained. The action is working and the bore shows use with some shallow rifling remaining. The brass bands and correct rear sight are also retained. The sling swivels have been removed. A rare Civil War era rifle by one of the most famous Philadelphia makers who had many contracts in the 19th-century to make arms from the U.S. military and state of Pennsylvania. William A.
