TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Federal Bureau of Investigation letterhead, April 14, 1950. Letter to Willis Thornton, in part: “Certainly the editorial you referred to, which appeared in the April 8 issue of Editor & Publisher represents neither the practice nor policy of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This editorial was predicated upon an incorrect premise as at no time did any representative of the FBI request or instruct anyone connected with the incident involving the suicide of an Agent of this Bureau on March 28 to suppress the facts. Following the discovery of the suicide, the Deputy Coroner was summoned, the police were called and investigated, a clergyman was summoned to administer the last rites of the Church, and the undertaker filed his death certificate prior to shipping the body to the home of this former Agent. When queried, the FBI furnished the facts. We have checked with the individuals connected with the incident and they all advised that they were not instructed to suppress facts by the FBI or any representative of the FBI. Obviously, I regretted such an incident and I was very sorry that Editor & Publisher did not see fit to give us the courtesy of an inquiry prior to their editorial condemnation.” In fine condition, with some light scattered spots of foxing and two tack holes to the top edge.
