TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, FBI letterhead, January 3, 1963. Letter to a woman in Canada. In part: “The FBI, as an investigative agency of the Federal Government, does not make or draw conclusions as to the character or integrity of any organization, publication, or individual…I would like to point out that I have never publicly expressed an opinion regarding the nuclear disarmament question. However, I feel it is important that freedom-loving people educate themselves concerning the true nature of communism in order that they will be able to resist its eroding influence. The best way to fight this evil conspiracy is to study it, learn all you can about it and exhibit in all positive ways the superiority of democratic procedures over totalitarian ideology.” In fine condition, with scattered creasing. Accompanied by several pamphlets Hoover included with this letter. It was Hoover’s covert activities against suspected communist organizations and individuals that garnered him some of the harshest criticism during his tenure as director.
