Fabled Confederate general (1833–1864) best known for his consummate skill in reconnaissance and as a cavalry officer. After leading successful offensive actions during the Northern Virginia Campaign—as well as a “late,” disastrous showing at Gettysburg, which led to a personal rebuke by Lee—Stuart was killed during the Overland Campaign at the age of 31. ALS signed “J. E. B. Stuart, 1st Lt. 1st Cav.,” and also signed again in the text, “Stuart,” one lightly lined page, 7.75 x 9.75, August 16, 1859. Stuart writes to the Adjutant General of the War Department. In full: “I have the honor to submit herewith a manual for “Stuart’s Sabre attachment,” which I submitted to the Cavalry Board at Carlisle, but was not considered by them on the ground that they had no power to act on it. They, however, individually suggested that it would be well to submit it to you to be acted upon contemporaneously with the proceedings of the Board. In case the latter are approved the service will require some such system as the one presented.” In very fine and extremely fresh, clean condition. Previously recommended for army adoption by a board of cavalry officers, the War Department purchased the rights to produce the quickly detachable saber attachment, which featured a spring-loaded catch for easy removal of the weapon. Designed by Stuart just before the start of the Civil War, this unique piece of hardware was patented in October 1859. The importance of Stuart’s attachment is often overlooked in military history, but at the time was welcomed by cavalrymen. As most fighting took place dismounted, the saber served little real purpose and actually hampered a soldier’s movement. It was while in Washington to discuss a government contract for this very weapon that Stuart heard of John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry, leading the young Army officer to volunteer to join Robert E. Lee in confronting Brown—and undoubtedly bringing his attachment with him.
