J.D Smillie (1833-1909) American, Etching 1880
Etching by James David Smillie, an American artist from New York who was associated
with the Realist and Romantic movements of the 1880’s. He was known for landscape
engravings and collaborated on illustrations for novels by James Fenimore Cooper, and
he even engraved bank notes in this country. He began painting in 1865 and was a
founder of the American Watercolor Society. The title of the etching is “The Way to the
River” and it is signed on the plate in the lower left.
