War Department mailing envelope, 10.25 x 4.5, signed in the upper left corner, “J. D. Salinger,” above his typed return address which reads: “Sgt. J. D. Salinger / AAF, BFS / 322nd Base Hq. and Air Base Sqdrn. / Bainbridge, Georgia.” Letter is addressed to his friend Frances Glassmoyer in Glenside, Pennsylvania. Salinger also adds “Free,” in his hand to the right of the January 11, 1943, Bainbridge, Georgia, postmark. In very good condition, with tears and paper loss along top edge, lightly affecting portions of signature, printed information on envelope “x’d” out by Salinger in type, scattered creases and wrinkles, as well as scattered toning. At the time, Salinger was an instructor in Air Navigation and Code at the Army Air Force Basic Flying School in Bainbridge. A most unusual format for Salinger.
