J.D. Salinger TLS & Envelope
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Wonderful J.D. Salinger typed letter signed ''Jerry'' written 19 October 1961, just after the publication of ''Franny & Zooey.'' Salinger writes to his college friend Frances Terry Glassmoyer, who was incidentally his literary inspiration for the character Franny Glass in ''Franny & Zooey.'' Letter reads in part, ''...My rose-colored glasses may be getting a trifle too misty for my own good, but I keep toying with the idea that Ursinus may well be the last unpretentious seat of learning in the whole country...Our summer and fall up here has been pretty much on the hellish side, as you seem to have guessed. Luce [''Time'' magazine publisher Henry Luce] employees and other gossip hounds patrolling our rural road, annoying my parents and friends almost to tears, over-alerting the children, thrilling a series of dopey baby-sitters. We'd move, in a minute, but there's really no place to go, and we love the countryside here, the change of seasons, etc. But this is all a sore subject with me, best dropped quickly. I had a note from Jack Kinsella, my old roommate. It was an unbearably congratulatory note, but it was kindly meant...What you say about Donkey Witmer sets old reflexes in motion. I've thought of him many times, over the years. I never meant to disturb or nonplus him, but the fact remains that I did. I respected and liked him, but I didn't know how to behave toward him...No, the kids don't look much like me. Three blue-eyed types in the house. Which is O.K. with me. And, yes, it's marvelous to watch and enjoy them. They give so much joy and pleasure, it almost hurts...'' Single page measures 8.5'' x 11''. With original envelope as well as drafts of Terry's 6 October and 2 March 1962 letters to him, with her reaction to ''Franny & Zooey.'' Near fine.
