J.D. Salinger TL & Envelope
Scarce and insightful J.D. Salinger typed letter dated 19 January 1941 written when he was 22 years old. Addressed to Frances (Terry) Thierolf, his former Ursinus College classmate and inspiration for his literary character Franny Glass in ''Franny & Zooey.'' In full, Have you read any of my stuff? My last piece appeared in the Chatenooga Reformatory Weekly. Joe DiMaggio says its the best story he ever read. Ive had stuff in Story, University Review, and so on. Doing a series of stories taken from the Bible nowHard to find a taker, though, as the series is humorous (in my opinion) and the public, lecherous as she is, likes to think of herself as moral, God-fearing, Ursinus-like, withy fine Reverend Sheeder blood flowing in her veins. Do you see Mary Helen Stoudts and people and Allen Dunns? Sometimes I think I'd like to see them. I put up with so many jerks and phoneys who provide copy but not peace of mindGot a card also from Ruthie Smith who next to you was the best girl at Ursinus. Just as though it were only ten years ago I can see Ruthie pole-vaultingI go to Philly once every three or four months. Perhaps we might get together for a little orgie sometimeHave you taken to a career? Basket-weaving or the like? Did you read my story THE YOUNG FOLKS, in Story? Oh, it was a gay thing. Have another story coming out soon, possibly in Mademoiselle, about a has-been child star who has developed a gigantic bust. Very funny, very sad. Write me a letter, Terry. Tell all to the werewolf boy. Love and kisses, Young Salinger. Includes 8.75 x 4 envelope handwritten by Salinger that has light ink smears and a torn flap, otherwise very good. Letter measuring 8.5 x 11 has folds and light toning, else in near fine condition.
