J.D. Salinger Signed ''Catcher in the Rye''
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
J.D. Salinger signed copy of his literary masterpiece, ''The Catcher in the Rye.'' Signed ''With good wishes, JDS'' on the front free endpaper, and very rare as such, since Salinger was loathe to sign copies of his perfect novel. Bantam Books/Little Brown & Company: New York: 1964. This classic paperback edition with yellow letters against a maroon background is perhaps the most recognizable ''Catcher,'' with its ubiquitous presence on high school and college campuses. It was brought by high school English teacher Esta Waddell to dinner with Salinger, where the author signed it in May 1982. That night, Salinger was in Jacksonville, Florida, attending a performance at the Alhambra Dinner Theatre, where a woman whom Salinger had been romancing via phone calls and letters, was performing. Mrs. Waddell's husband was the set designer for the theatre company and was asked to dine with Salinger that night. Accompanying the signed book is a note and certificate of authenticity from Esta Waddell and a newspaper article recounting the night, with mention of Salinger signing her copy of ''Catcher.'' Book has been dog-eared and sentences have been underlined in some places, with previous owner's name written in green felt marker on fore, top and tail edges. Paperback book measures 4'' x 7'' and is in very good condition.
