Original brown cloth covers, 12¼&#34; x 10¼&#34;, showing four, gold-stamped jumping horses as decoration and gold-stamped spine; wear to corners and edges of spine. Covers are attached but loosening. Interior is lightly toned but nice, tight and clean. 127 pages, illustrated with 107 plates, including color lithographs, heliotypes, photogravures, and wood engravings after photographs by <B>E. Muybridge</B>. The frontispiece shows the &#34;Arrangement of the Cameras for Taking the Illustrations of the Paces.&#34; In 1872, Leland Stanford, former California governor and founder of Stanford University and ow ner of a large stable, wagered a friend that a race horse at full gallop takes all four feet off the ground at some point.
