American businessman and entrepreneur (1875–1971) who built a chain of eponymous retail stores and pioneered employee profit sharing. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, November 9, 1955. Response to a local reverend’s speaking request. In part: “Thank you for your letter of November 1st in which you invite me to speak to your congregation some Sunday evening in May 1956. Sometime in January Mrs. Penney and I plan to visit our daughter who is at present living in India…I also expect to visit Japan on my return voyage and, therefore, may not return until sometime in May. Because of the indefiniteness of my plans, I do not feel that I should accept the May 20th date…Believing that you may find them of interest, I am enclosing reprints of the following: ‘Penney Wise,’ ‘Faith Gave Me A New Start at 56,’ and ‘Christian Principles in Business.’” In fine condition, with light, scattered surface creasing. Accompanied by a cardstock photo of Penney.
