J. C. Leyendecker - "Weapons for Liberty" poster (American Lithographic Co., 1918). Born in Germany in 1874, Joseph Leyendecker came to America with his family and quickly discovered his aptitude for art. After studying in Chicago, he dreamed of becoming a full-time illustrator, a dream which came true in 1896 when he won a competition held by The Century Magazine (ironically, Maxfield Parrish came in second), and was awarded the opportunity to illustrate one of their covers. With that success behind him, Leyendecker went on to become one of the most important illustrators of the early twentieth century. Offered here is perhaps his most famous work, his Weapons for Liberty poster, created at the height of the First World War to promote the sale of Liberty Loan Bonds. A tremendous success, over $355 million worth of bonds were sold to support the war effort. This chromolithograph poster, printed by the American Lithographic Company, measures approximately 20" x 30" and is in excellent condition. A rare opportunity to acquire a true piece of Americana.
