9" x 6.75" on larger mount with Grabill's Sturgis, Dak. Ter. imprint, and identified in the negative 165 Roundup of Moss Agate ...and Others. With Grabill's imprint on verso, and boldly autographed Captain McDougall [indecipherable] Cavalry.

A fine image in its own right made more desirable by the autograph of Captain Thomas Mower McDougall, a career Army man. He joined the 7th Cavalry in 1870 and was with Custer on the Yellowstone (1873) and Black Hills expeditions (1874). McDougall was with Company B at the Little Big Horn and survived the Hilltop fight with Reno's forces. Afterwards he engaged in actions against the Nez Perce in 1877, and was part of the detail escorting Joseph and his people to Fort Abraham Lincoln. He returned to the Dakota Territory in 1882, and retired in 1890. A scarce autograph of an LBH survivor.
