Porter-style aqua bottle with inverted tapered lip manufactured by Joseph Curtis Buffum in Pittsburgh, Pa., c1849-55, embossed in serif lettering, "Buffum.s/Porter" on the front. Pontil and surface wear. 7.5" tall with 3.5" diameter.
Buffum was one of the most prolific bottlers and manufacturers of his time.
He went into the bottling business with his brother, opening J.C. Buffum & Co. in Pittsburgh, Pa., a manufacturing and bottling business at 39 & 41 Market St., in 1845. He traveled back and forth to California, buying properties and expanding his business to San Francisco, eventually moving with his wife to Fair Oaks, California. J.C. Buffum & Co. operated all the way to 1922, even after Buffum’s death in 1904.
The Buffum name is on various bottles containing ale, lager beer, champagne, ginger beer, lemon, mead, mineral water, pop, porter, root beer, sarsaparilla, soda and flavors of syrups. Pennsylvania Robert Coelln Collection
