English writer, social commentator, and broadcaster (1894–1984) who is remembered for the novel The Good Companions, and whose left-wing beliefs influenced the rise of the Welfare State. Two items: a TLS, one page, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, January 6, 1978, in part: “I think my own favourite now among my novels is The Image Men, which a fellow novelist said in print the other day that he had read ten times. He has done better than I have, but I do turn to it and re-read it with some satisfaction”; and a 3.75 x 4.75 book photo of Priestley affixed to a slightly larger sheet, signed on the front in black ink, as well as on the reverse, adding “who attributes his success to hard work & sticking at it.” In overall fine condition, with toning to the signed reverse of the photo.
