English writer, social commentator, and broadcaster (1894-1984) who is remembered for the novel The Good Companions, and whose left-wing beliefs influenced the rise of the Welfare State. Original sketch of English writer J. B. Priestley by artist John Raitt, accomplished in graphite on an off-white 5.5 x 8.5 sheet, signed in the lower right in ink, "J. B. Priestly, March 1947." The sketch is also signed by the artist. In fine condition, with thin tape stains at the corners. John Raitt began sketching celebrities while a college student in the 1930s. He sent pencil portraits like this to his famous subjects, requesting that they be autographed and returned.
