World War II-dated ALS signed “P.F.C. Rene,” four pages, 7 x 10.5, United States Marines letterhead, July 27, 1943. Handwritten letter to his girlfriend Pauline Harnois, whom Gagnon refers to as “Kiddo,” written while guarding the Naval Prison Camp in Charleston, South Carolina, in part: “I’m in the Naval Prison here, and all I got to do is watch the prisoners. Every day after four o’clock I can go to town till the next morning. One day I work and then the other day I get the whole day off. Every two weeks I get a week end off that is I get 48 hours I can leave…This place is heaven compared to what I had before…don't forget we're getting married as soon as the war is over, and from the looks of things now, it won't be long before I’ll be learning to change diapers.” Gagnon adds a postscript, his new address that contains his full signature, “P.F.C. Rene Arthur Gagnon U.S.M.C.,” and an amusing sketch of him guarding a prisoner picking up trash. In fine condition, with envelope-related toning to the top corners of the letter. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope, with Gagnon incorporating his signature into the return address field, "P.F.C. R. A. Gagnon, U.S.M.C."
