Whole plate ivorytype in deep sculpted gilded frame, by B. F. Ferguson, Philadelphia. Has a label attached to the back of the frame, for Ferguson, Artist, S.W. cor. 8th & Arch Sts., Philadelphia. "Ivorytypes, surpassing the finest painting on Ivory, executed in the best style, at prices to suit the times... " This complex process, developed by Wenderoth in Philadelphia, had a brief flowering in that city. M. P. Simons wrote a book on the process. The cover lot of the last Be-hold catalog was an Ivorytype. This is signed by Ferguson on the plate and dated 1862. It is a supremely rich showpiece for the brilliant coloring this process was capable of producing. There is the brilliant red of the "curtain" at left, the fabulous blue of the boy's shirt, and that amazing rug. My sense is that this is one of the paradigm examples of this process, and belongs in a major private or institutional collection.
