Ithaca, NY- Charles Lord 8¢ Aug. 1, 1843 Harris 42
This is the Harris plate note for this excessively rare issuer, and one of our favorite pieces from the Gordon Harris collection sale, which we held in September of 2003. it was purchased there by Herb and Martha Schingoethe, and, when sold as part of their collection in March of 2005, described as follows: "This is a subtle piece, but quite awesome in its simplicity. We can't recall another 8 cents note on New York. The Durand reference on denominations makes no mention of it and rates the denomination itself as "Excessively Rare" and rated "A" for an advanced typeset of different denominations. The decimal is equivalent during the early American period to 6 pence in the English system. This came from the Harris Collection sale in 2003 and has a bold blue signature. The paper has a natural hue to it and is very crisp. Again, just great." It realized $1150 in its latest offering, a testament to just how inexpensive great obsolete items are compared to similar items of comparable rarity in other numismatic specialties. Very Fine-Extremely Fine.
From The Collection of a Louisiana Gentleman.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
