Italy Lucca. Silver 5 Franchi 1805, KM-24.1,
Lucca. Silver 5 Franchi 1805, KM-24.1, About XF, nice for issue, pleasing two-tone gray surfaces. Scarce. Known for its walls and broad avenues, this town in Tuscany, at the time of this coin's minting, was in the hands of the Bonapartes. Napoleon's sister Elisa Baciocchi was made "queen" and her portrait appears here in prominence. Reference to this regal situation, which lasted a mere decade, is the opening sentence of Leo Tolstoy's great novel, "War and Peace." Elisa's portrait here appears somewhat quizzical but well engraved. Hopefully she enjoyed her respite in the Tuscan sun, for she was soon doomed. Here is a neat memento of those days.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
