<B>ITALIAN OR FRENCH SCHOOL </B></I>(Eighteenth Century)<BR><I>Portrait of Don Angiolo Antoni</B></I><BR>Oil on canvas<BR>39 x 29 in.<BR>The paper held in the left hand of the sitter bears an inscription identifying him as Don Angiolo Antoni.<BR> <BR>The Italian cleric depicted in this portrait is possibly Angiolo Onofrio Melchiorre Natalie Giovanni Antonio. He was a member of the distinguished but impoverished Braschi family, and eventually rose through the church hierarchy to become Pope Pius VI. Pompeo Batoni painted his portrait and Canova sculpted his bust. He died in France.<B>Condition Report:</B> The painting has been relined. Scratches above the sitters head, along upper right edge. Tiny paint losses along the upper right corner.
