This shield is in the style of a 16th century style Italian fencing shield. A similar shield is pictured in the book "A GLOSSARY OF THE Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor IN ALL COUNTRIES AND IN ALL TIMES" by George Cameron Stone on page 554. The shield was forged from laminated steel and measures 29 inches long, the 15 1/4 inch diameter round section has three concentric rings for trapping an opponents sword and a hook for hanging a lantern. The section that covers the forearm has a scalloped ridge that stands 2 1/4 inches tall. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection

Good, the shield has moderate pitting overall with several areas of breakthroughs and cracks. The rib is slightly loose with the rings and lantern hook solid. The rings and rib may be replacements. Certainly an interesting item for any collection!
