Italian School Venice, late 17th century The Temple at Jerusalem Oil on Canvas 43 x 551/2 in. 109.5 x 141 cm - $25,000-35,000 Since its destruction by the Romans in 70 AD, the original architectural form of the Temple of Jerusalem has been the subject of intense scholarly debate. Numerous theoretical reconstructions based on biblical descriptions of the Temple were produced at the close of the 15th century with the development of graphic illustration and the printed book. The present work is almost certainly based upon engravings produced in France and the low countries between 1570 and 1660. The image would appear to be a composite of several recorded designs, principally an anonymous engraving of 1600 attributed to the Flemish School and now in the Musée Gray, together with another engraving of 1642 'A View of the Temple of Solomon' by Jacob Judah Leon. Spanish and Flemish versions of Leon's design are currently held in the British Library, London.
