Italian School 19th century Ruins at Temple of Jupiter at Agrigento Oil on Canvas 501/2 x 591/2 in. 128 x 151 cm - $10,000-15,000 the reverse of the stretcher inscribed 'Telamoni di Agrigento', Agrigento in Southern Sicily is one of the greatest ancient Greek sites outside of Greece. The temple of Jupiter started circa 460 BC, although never actually completed, was one of the largest temples ever built, with columns 20 meters high. In between the Doric columns supporting the temple's pediment stood colossal 'Telamoni' or caryatids as depicted in the painting. Although the temple, incomplete, was sacked by the Carthiginians circa 406 BC, And later ruined by pagan-fearing christians, its remains were salvaged by Sicilian archaeologists. One of the massive Telamoni has been reconstructed from the remains and stands as testament to the scale and grandeur of the ancient Greek architects. It can be seen in the Museum of Antiquities in Agrigento, and a coliseum remains amongst the archaelogical ruins on the site of the temple itself.
