Beautiful Biga, antique Roman two horses Chariot, in this case a military Chariot, with an eagle at the front, symbol of the Roman Empire , detailed metal sculpture with bronze patina, measuring 29 inches wide, 19 inches H , and 10 inches D. in very good conditions , Standing over a fine Italian Portora marble. Races for chariots and bareback horses were introduced early in the 7th century, the four horse chariot Quadriga being the first form entered for the opening Olympiad (680 BC). The two horse Biga chariot became an official event only in 408 BC.
Chariot racing enjoyed an Empire-wide following of immense popularity until forbidden by the Christian Emperor Justinian 1st in 532 AD. This was due to public disorder associated with the ardent following of the factions. However, racing continued in the Eastern Empire, chiefly in Constantinople, for a further 500 years.
