<B>Copper Proof Penny 1733,</B></I> S-7405, KM-5, one of a succession of issues of the Stanley family or the Earls of Derby (the first models for this coin being cast in 1709, while later pieces were struck). Choice Proof with a deep, crisp strike and absolutely marvelous, chocolate-brown surfaces. The edge displays the classic round-the-coin (i.e., not of reeded style) fillet lines that are characteristic of proof issues. One of the finest of these seen by the cataloguer in years, and far rarer than the later 1758 and 1786 issues. The Latin legend on the 3-legs or triskelion side (the image of which derives from the Norwegian founders of the island, whose surname meant "leg") means "Whithersoever you throw it, it will stand," an allusion to the island residents' hardy character and their history of warding off invaders (beginning with Romans in the 1st century B.C. and including Vikings in the 8th century), while the charming obverse motif recalls the Celtic sea-god (a sea eagle) who threw his cloak around the island to protect it.
