Brigadier general in the Confederate States Army (1816–1863) who was shot and killed on June 17, 1863 during the Vicksburg Campaign while confronting Union snipers who were harassing his regiment. He had been promoted to Brigadier general on May 29, 1863, but the news hadn't yet reached beleaguered Vicksburg.
Ink signature, “I. W. Garrott,” on an off-white 3.25 x 1.25 slip clipped from a larger letter. In very good condition, with moderate toning and soiling, ink notations in another hand, mounting remnants on the reverse, and the initials a shade or two light.
