First governor of the Washington Territory (1818–1862), United States congressman, and a brigadier general in the Union Army during the Civil War until his death at the Battle of Chantilly. Civil War–dated LS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, May 1, 1862. Letter to Provost Marshal Eustis. In part: “Orders have long since been issued prohibiting the sale of liquor to the negroes as well as to enlisted men within the limits of this command, and directing that any person against whom probable cause of suspicion exists that he is engaged in the traffic, be sent to the Provost Marshal at this place for investigation.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. Stevens was killed in battle just four months later when he was charging forward with his troops while carrying the banner of Saint Andrew's Cross.
