TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, July 22, 1954. Letter to Dayton L. Ranck, in part: “I appreciate your invitation to be the honorary conductor on either March 5th or April 16th of next year, but I’m afraid I must decline on two counts. (a) If you really mean for me to stand up with a baton in my hand and conduct the orchestra, quite seriously, I couldn’t do it. I’d be very apt to give your musicians an up-beat where they expected a down-beat. (b) I couldn’t possibly make any definite date that far ahead because I don’t know what I will be doing or where I will be. However, I do want to pay a visit to Bucknell. Not as a conductor, but as someone Bucknell has honored in the past and I would like to informally play some songs for your student body, talk with them and answer questions. Just when that could be is difficult to say at this time, but I’m sure we can arrive at a date that will be convenient for all of us.” In fine condition, with several tack holes to upper left corner. Accompanied by an unsigned postcard photo of Berlin.
